From choosing the perfect venue to booking your wedding vendors, finalising invoices, creating a seating plan... it’s a lot to think about!

But, you only get to plan a wedding once, so we think it should be as stress-free (and enjoyable) as possible. If you’re at the beginning of your wedding planning journey, keep these 10 practical wedding planning tips to help you plan a seamless event.

  1. KNOW YOUR PRIORITIES

Before you move forward with booking your venue and wedding team, take some time to really think about your priorities for the day first. With so much involved in planning a wedding, getting clear on your top priorities will make it much easier to invest your time, research and budget accordingly.

Try to determine your top 5 priorities for the day, whether that’s live music, beautiful flowers, creative styling, comfortable seating or a killer cocktail list. Then, keep these priorities front of mind as you start getting deeper into the wedding planning process! You’ll want to dedicate more time (and funds) towards your more important priorities, while the less important details can be lower on your list (with less budget allocated).

Whenever you start to feel overwhelmed, look back at your priorities to remind yourself of the bigger picture - there’s just no use stressing about the small stuff if your priorities have been taken care of.

2. DEFINE YOUR WEDDING VISION

Something else you should think about before making any big decisions is your wedding style and “vision” for the day. Most of your wedding vendors will need to understand your vision in order to do their job properly, so get clear on this to streamline your communication moving forward.

Are you guys picturing an intimate long table setting with lots of moody lighting? A relaxed marquee wedding by the beach? A bohemian cocktail party underneath a giant tipi? Start saving your favourite inspo on Pinterest, create a mood board, and really nail down your desired colours, materials, aesthetic and overall “vibe” of your day (check out our top tips for defining your wedding style here). Having a clear vision will make it much easier to communicate with your different vendors, who can then help you bring your vision to life through their own skills and services.

3. CREATE A CHECKLIST

One last thing you might want to finalise before moving forward with booking vendors is creating a checklist of everything that needs to be done before the wedding, with deadlines or a rough timeline for each one. Think about what needs to be booked by the 12-month mark, 8-month mark, 6-month mark, and so on. This will be a huge help when it comes to time management and ensuring you don’t forget any important details.

You can also create a checklist for each vendor with your requirements, such as your florist, caterer and furniture and decor hire. Having a physical checklist - whether that’s in a journal, excel spreadsheet or Google doc - will help you feel organised and at ease, especially when you start ticking those tasks off your list. 4. BOOK YOUR KEY VENDORS FIRST

Speaking of timelines, you’ll want to make sure you book your key vendors in ASAP to avoid disappointment. Refer back to your priorities for the day to determine who you need to secure first. Keep in mind that the most in-demand vendors such as wedding venues, photographers, floristry and furniture hire do book out well in advance, particularly during peak season or around public holidays. If you know that you definitely want a specific vendor or product, we recommend locking them in as soon as possible to give you peace of mind (see our furniture hire timeline here for our recommendations!).

5. MAKE IT PERSONAL

As you start planning the different styling elements of your day, it can be easy to get swept up in the latest trends and Pinterest snaps. But before you get too carried away, stop and think about how you can ensure your day is truly personal. Try to draw inspiration from the things that you both genuinely love or hold meaning to you, to make your day feel as authentic as possible. This could be things like colours, songs, quotes and menu selections right down to the location of your venue itself. Keeping things personal will ensure your wedding styling remains timeless and won’t “date” quickly.

6. HAVE A WET-WEATHER PLAN

Guys, having a wet weather plan is soooo important - trust us! The last thing you want to be dealing with on the morning of your big day is finding a last-minute plan B as you get your hair and makeup done. No matter what season your wedding date falls in, the weather is totally unpredictable. If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, make sure you have a practical wet weather plan locked and loaded for each element of your day (ceremony, cocktail hour, reception), and ensure all of your vendors have a copy of your plan, too. Opting for a marquee, tent or tipi wedding as opposed to a totally alfresco setting is a great way to alleviate some of those weather worries!

7. BE MINDFUL WITH DIY

Going DIY with your wedding planning can seem like a great way to save some extra dollars and create a personalised celebration. But we’d recommend being mindful of how much you choose to put on your own plate!

Choosing to DIY your entire wedding can sometimes lead to some stressful moments closer to the day if you have limited time at your disposal. If you are going down the DIY route, be realistic about what you can actually achieve in the time you have available, and maybe focus on just a few elements while outsourcing others - don’t overcommit yourself!

8. AIM TO FINALISE EVERYTHING BY THE 1-WEEK MARK

The week leading up to your wedding day can be seriously crazy, with family and guests travelling, pre-wedding celebrations and rehearsals to attend. With this in mind, try to have all of your wedding tasks well and truly ticked off by the 1-week mark - don’t procrastinate!

Getting everything out of the way early means you can spend the week relaxing, getting pampered and enjoying yourself (rather than feeling frazzled!). Hiring a wedding planner or coordinator can be a serious godsend here to take a huge weight off your shoulders.

9. ASK FOR HELP

The truth is, planning a wedding can get overwhelming and you might feel lost, confused or simply a little out of your depth. If so, don’t be afraid to ask for help, and remember that every other couple is in the same boat! We get plenty of calls from newly engaged couples needing some help or direction with their wedding hire plans, and we’re always happy to assist as much as possible - you’ll find other wedding vendors are the same. There’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to wedding planning, so ask for help when you need it.
