Ceremony Seating Tips & Inspiration

When it comes to choosing your ceremony chairs, consider the overall “vibe” you’re hoping to create throughout your wedding, and use this as inspiration. The style, colour and design of your ceremony seating can actually make a space look and feel completely different!

For example, our wire Soho chairs are best suited to a modern luxe kind of setting, our wooden timber bench seats work well for a relaxed, boho-inspired ceremony, and our white bentwood chairs are perfect for a classic, timeless or coastal look. Try to stay consistent with the furniture styles you’re using in the other areas of your wedding, to create a nice “flow” from your ceremony through to your cocktail hour and reception.

In terms of chair numbers, you don’t need to organise a chair for every guest. You might want to accommodate enough seating for between 30 - 50% of your guests, depending on the space you have available at your venue.

Don’t forget about your signing chairs, too! You’ll want to order an additional 2 seats (and a signing table) for the signing proceedings. Some celebrants may provide these items as part of their package - just make sure you check what they have available, to ensure it aligns with the rest of your ceremony styling.

Signing chairs can also be used as a statement piece for your ceremony - we love our rattan Peacock chairs for a bohemian setting! You can re-purpose statement signing chairs for your bridal table during your reception, or even as a fun addition to your photo booth.

Ceremony Backdrop Tips & Inspiration

It’s no secret that we love a good backdrop here at HEH!

A ceremony backdrop or arbour at your ceremony “altar” is a beautiful way to frame the setting and create a focal point - particularly if your ceremony is taking place in a wide open space. Plus, they always look amazing in photos, and can even be used as a backdrop for guests to snap a photo after your nuptials.

Consider what kind of backdrop will best complement your ceremony chairs & venue surroundings. That might be a traditional 4-post arbour, or something a little different like a wire backdrop, green wall or round arbour (a current favourite of ours!). Style your backdrop with florals, foliage or flowers to make it a real feature.

You can also create a focal point or backdrop simply by using elements like rugs, potted plants, or even oversized arrangements on wine barrels. The possibilities are pretty endless!

Don’t forget to send dimensions and photos of your chosen backdrop, arbour or structure to your florist before the big day to help them plan and create your arrangements, too.

Practical Ceremony Tips

Along with looking beautiful, your ceremony styling should also be practical, too. Keep the following tips in mind for ceremony styling to ensure everyone is comfortable on the day:

  • Consider the orientation of your ceremony setting - the last thing you want is the sun in your eyes while you read your vows! Think about the season and the time of day your ceremony proceedings are taking place, and have a chat with your venue for their recommendations on ceremony positioning based on previous weddings.

  • You may be able to re-purpose certain elements from your ceremony such as your signing table (for a cake table), floral arrangements (for your bar or reception tables), even your ceremony chairs themselves. However, this will only work logistically if your ceremony is at the same location as your venue, and if you have a dedicated team (like a wedding coordinator) to make this happen smoothly and safely.

  • Consider organising some umbrellas for an outdoor ceremony taking place during the sunnier months. Just don’t position them too close to the aisle or they’ll detract from your photos - keep them to the back/sides of your setting.

  • Think about what’s happening immediately after your ceremony. For example, are guests going to be mingling in the same area while you get some photos taken? If so, you might want to organise a drink station or grazing table.

  • Don’t forget about additional furniture requirements such as a table and basket for your ceremony programs, an easel for your welcome sign, etc. You can check out our furniture hire checklists as a helpful guide to ensure you don't miss anything!

  • Always, always, always have a Plan B in case of wet weather, and make sure this plan is clearly communicated to your coordinator, venue, or whoever is taking charge of logistics on the day. Coordinating a last minute wet weather plan is not something you want to be dealing with on the morning of your wedding!
